SEO in Yorkshire: four counties behind one search term

Yorkshire is one word on a map and four different economies on the ground. West Yorkshire buys like a capital city, South Yorkshire like an industrial region, North Yorkshire like a collection of market towns, and the East Riding like a port. A business that types SEO Yorkshire is usually looking for one of those, and the page that ranks for the county is almost never the page that wins it customers. This is how the regional search actually behaves, what a Yorkshire business should target instead, and Doncaster worked through as the example.

One word on the map, four economies on the ground

Yorkshire is the largest historic county in England, and the word covers more ground than any single search campaign can honestly serve. Leeds is a financial and legal centre that behaves like a second capital. Sheffield and Rotherham still make things, and the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley is where Boeing and McLaren chose to put factories. Doncaster moves goods, because the East Coast Main Line, the A1(M), the M18 and the iPort logistics park all meet there. York, Harrogate and the market towns of North Yorkshire sell heritage, hospitality and professional advice to a comfortable catchment. Hull and the East Riding are a port, an energy coast and a caravan holiday economy. Bradford was UK City of Culture in 2025 and is the youngest large city in the country by median age.

None of those places searches like the others. A solicitor in Leeds, a steel fabricator in Rotherham, a haulier in Doncaster, a holiday-cottage owner in Whitby and a wind-turbine supplier in Hull are all “Yorkshire businesses” and they have almost nothing in common as far as Google is concerned. Yet the search seo yorkshire exists, it is typed every month, and a whole industry of pages has grown up to catch it.

This page is about what that search actually is, who really types it, why the pages that rank for it are mostly not what a Yorkshire business needs, and what to do instead, county area by county area, with Doncaster worked through in detail because it is the clearest example of a town where the honest approach wins and the county approach loses.

The disclosure first, because every other page in this results set leads with an office. I am one specialist working remotely from Lahore. I have no office in Leeds, Sheffield, York, Hull or Doncaster, and nothing here will claim otherwise. What follows is what the searches do, not where I sit.

THE COUNTY SEARCH

What Google shows for seo yorkshire, and who is really typing it

Type the county search into Google UK and the page has a fixed shape. A map pack of three agencies drawn from wherever you are standing, so a searcher in Leeds sees Leeds agencies and a searcher in Scarborough sees whatever is nearest to Scarborough. Then the organic results: a large regional agency’s Yorkshire location page, a couple of “top fifteen SEO agencies in Yorkshire” listicles compiled by directories that sell the listings, several North Yorkshire pages from small studios around Harrogate and Skipton, and national agencies with a templated page for every county in England. Underneath, People also ask, and increasingly an AI Overview stitched together from the same pages.

Now ask who types it. Not a dentist in Wakefield, who types dentist marketing wakefield or, more often, nothing at all until a patient mentions Google. Not a plumber in Barnsley, who types seo barnsley if anything. The county search is typed by four kinds of people: marketing managers at businesses large enough to think regionally, who then shortlist by city anyway; procurement teams and public bodies who have been told to find a Yorkshire supplier; agencies and freelancers studying the competition; and people in towns too small to have their own agency page, who fall back to the county because the town search returned nothing useful. The last group is real and it is the only one an honest county page is built for.

That is why the pages ranking for the county term read the way they do. They are not written for a customer; they are written for a shortlist. Awards, team sizes, office photographs and case studies dominate, because the person shortlisting has no other way to compare. The search has almost no local intent, because Yorkshire is not a locality. It is fifty places pretending to be one for the convenience of a keyword tool.

The consequence for a Yorkshire business is simple and slightly deflating. Winning the county search would bring you agencies, students and procurement officers. The customers you actually want are typing the name of the town they are in, and Google is drawing the map pack from the pavement they are standing on. The county page is a page for agencies. Your page is the town page.

The four Yorkshire county areas compared on their main towns, what their businesses sell and how their customers search
Four county areas, one search term. The demand, the competition and the map pack behave differently in each, so a campaign built for Leeds underperforms in Doncaster and wastes money in Whitby. Google treats the county word as a weak signal and the town as a strong one.
FOUR COUNTY AREAS

West, South, North and East: how each one searches

Yorkshire has been administered as four separate areas for half a century, and since 2024 all four have their own combined authority: West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, York and North Yorkshire, and Hull and East Yorkshire. The administrative lines happen to match the economic ones, so they are a useful way to think about search.

West Yorkshire is Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Kirklees around Huddersfield and Calderdale around Halifax. Leeds carries one of the largest concentrations of legal, financial and professional-services firms outside London, the national headquarters of Channel 4, Asda and Sky’s largest northern base, and Leeds station is the busiest in the North. Bradford has Morrisons and the Yorkshire Building Society. Wakefield and Castleford have distribution and Burberry’s factory. Search here behaves like a big city: high volume, high competition, national agencies bidding on everything, and buyers who compare five suppliers before they call. The organic result matters as much as the map pack, because professional buyers research.

South Yorkshire is Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster. Sheffield’s two universities and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre anchor an engineering economy that never left; Rotherham’s Advanced Manufacturing Park hosts Boeing, McLaren and Rolls-Royce facilities; Barnsley and Doncaster carry logistics, construction and the trades. Search here is thinner than West Yorkshire and far more winnable, especially for business-to-business terms, because manufacturers and hauliers have historically been slow to build proper pages. It is also where map-pack competition for trades is fiercest per head, because a Barnsley plumber’s customers all search from Barnsley.

North Yorkshire, with York inside it as its own unitary authority, is the largest area by land and the smallest by population density. York itself is a heritage and tourism city with a university and a large public-sector workforce. Harrogate is an affluent spa and conference town. Scarborough, Whitby and Filey are the coast. Skipton, Richmond, Northallerton, Thirsk, Malton and Ripon are market towns serving the Dales and the Moors. Search here is seasonal, visitor-heavy and spread thin: a holiday-cottage owner competes on national booking platforms, a Harrogate solicitor competes with Leeds, and a Northallerton accountant competes with almost nobody online at all.

For paid social in that part of the county, the Facebook ads agency in Ripon page shows how a city of 16,589 people with no railway station is targeted without the radius leaking into Harrogate.

Hull and the East Riding is Hull, Beverley, Bridlington, Goole and the villages between. Hull is a port with P&O ferries to Rotterdam, the Siemens Gamesa blade factory, Reckitt, and a university; the Humber Bridge links it to North Lincolnshire; Bridlington and the coast carry caravan parks and seaside trade; Goole is an inland port on the M62 corridor. Search here is the least contested of the four, and the most under-served by agencies, because the big Leeds and Sheffield firms treat it as an afterthought.

The point of the tour is not geography. It is that a campaign designed for Leeds competition is over-built and over-priced for Beverley, and a campaign designed for Beverley will lose in Leeds. A county page cannot know which one you are, which is why it cannot help you.

DONCASTER, WORKED THROUGH

The town where the honest approach beats the county approach

Doncaster became a city in 2022, but everybody still calls it a town and the search behaviour agrees with them. It sits at the point where the East Coast Main Line, the A1(M), the M18 and the A630 meet, which is why the iPort logistics park at Rossington, the railway works that built Flying Scotsman and Mallard, DFS’s headquarters and Polypipe are all here, and why the airport that closed to passengers in 2022 mattered so much to the local economy. The Racecourse runs the St Leger every September, the oldest of the five Classics. The Frenchgate Centre and the Lakeside retail park carry the shopping; Doncaster Royal Infirmary is the largest employer; the Minster, the Mansion House, the Corn Exchange and the market are the civic centre. The DN postcodes stretch from Thorne and Stainforth in the north through Bentley, Adwick and Askern, past Balby, Hexthorpe, Wheatley, Intake and Bessacarr in the city itself, out to Armthorpe, Edenthorpe, Hatfield, Cantley and Rossington, and down to Tickhill, Bawtry, Conisbrough and Mexborough on the edges.

Now look at the search. Type seo doncaster and the results are unlike the county page in every way that matters. There is a map pack of three, drawn from where you stand. The organic results are a mix of two things: genuine Doncaster businesses, a consultant who works from the town and a couple of local agencies with real Doncaster pages, and templated Doncaster pages from national and Leeds agencies who have a page for every town in Yorkshire with the name swapped in. There are a listicle or two, a directory listing, and a page of Doncaster SEO specialists on a lead-generation marketplace. Google’s People also search for block returns web design doncaster, marketing agency doncaster and uk seo companies, which tells you the searcher is a local business owner shopping for help, not an agency benchmarking.

That is a winnable search, and the reason is the same reason the county search is not: intent. The person is in Doncaster, wants Doncaster help, and Google is trying to give them Doncaster pages. The templated pages are ranking because there is not enough genuine Doncaster content to displace them, and a genuine Doncaster page, one that knows the difference between Bessacarr and Balby, knows the iPort shifts and the Racecourse weekends, knows that half of Doncaster’s trade customers are hauliers and warehouses off the M18, beats a template the moment it exists.

For a Doncaster business the plan writes itself. The map pack first, because a plumber in Armthorpe or a dentist on Thorne Road lives or dies on it, and the map pack is a Business Profile job before it is a website job. Then a page that could only be about Doncaster, marked up properly and linked from the navigation. Then consistency, reviews and the two or three local links that actually exist: the Doncaster Chamber, the Doncaster Free Press when there is something worth reporting, and the trade bodies the business already belongs to. A Doncaster business does not need a Yorkshire page, a South Yorkshire page or a Sheffield City Region page. It needs one Doncaster page that is true.

The same logic applies to every town on this page. Replace Doncaster with Rotherham, Wakefield, Harrogate or Beverley and the plan does not change; only the streets do.

THE COUNTY, NAMED

The places a Yorkshire page has to actually know

A page that could only have been written about Yorkshire knows the county the way its residents do, and every place here is on a map or in the public record. This is not decoration. It is what separates a page written by someone who understands the region from one generated from a county list, and it is the raw material for the honest parts of a Business Profile: the service area drawn where the van actually goes, the landmarks in a description, the towns in the copy.

The cities and large towns. Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Hull, York, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley, Halifax, Harrogate, Scarborough, Dewsbury, Keighley, Castleford, Pontefract, Batley, Brighouse, Morley, Pudsey, Shipley, Bingley. Middlesbrough and Redcar sit in the historic North Riding but are administered as Tees Valley, and their searches behave as Teesside, not Yorkshire.

The market and coastal towns. Skipton, Settle, Ripon, Richmond, Northallerton, Thirsk, Malton, Pickering, Helmsley, Selby, Tadcaster, Wetherby, Knaresborough, Ilkley, Otley, Hebden Bridge, Holmfirth, Penistone, Thorne, Mexborough, Conisbrough, Tickhill, Bawtry, Beverley, Driffield, Bridlington, Filey, Whitby, Hornsea, Withernsea, Goole, Howden, Pocklington, Market Weighton, Hedon.

The roads and rails. The M1 up the spine to Leeds; the M62 across from Liverpool to Hull; the M18 and M180 linking Rotherham, Doncaster and Goole to the Humber; the A1(M) through Doncaster, Pontefract and Wetherby; the A64 to York and Scarborough; the A19 north through Thirsk and Northallerton; the A59 across the Dales; the A65 to Skipton. The East Coast Main Line through Doncaster, Wakefield, Leeds and York; the TransPennine route through Huddersfield; Leeds Bradford Airport; Hull Paragon; Sheffield Midland; the Humber Bridge.

The institutions. The University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett, Leeds Trinity, the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam, the University of York, York St John, the University of Hull, the University of Bradford, the University of Huddersfield, Teesside for the north edge. The West Yorkshire Combined Authority, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority. The West and North Yorkshire Chamber, the Sheffield Chamber, the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber, the Doncaster Chamber, the Mid Yorkshire Chamber, the Hull and Humber Chamber. Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Hull University Teaching Hospitals, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals.

The press a link can come from. The Yorkshire Post and the Yorkshire Evening Post in Leeds; The Star in Sheffield; the Doncaster Free Press; the Hull Daily Mail; the Telegraph and Argus in Bradford; the Huddersfield Examiner; the Halifax Courier; the York Press; the Harrogate Advertiser; the Scarborough News; the Whitby Gazette; the Craven Herald in Skipton; the Northern Echo on the northern edge; BBC Look North and ITV Calendar; Yorkshire Business Insider and Bdaily for the business pages.

The landmarks a description can honestly use. York Minster, the Shambles and the National Railway Museum; Sheffield’s Winter Garden and Meadowhall; Leeds Corn Exchange, Kirkgate Market and Trinity Leeds; the Piece Hall in Halifax; Salts Mill at Saltaire; the Humber Bridge and The Deep in Hull; the Harrogate Convention Centre and Bettys; Whitby Abbey; Scarborough Castle; Conisbrough Castle, Cusworth Hall and Brodsworth Hall around Doncaster; the Yorkshire Wildlife Park; Doncaster Racecourse; Headingley; Bramall Lane and Hillsborough; Elland Road; the Eco-Power Stadium; the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and the Peak District edge at Sheffield.

Use the places you genuinely serve and leave out the rest. A Wakefield accountant should name Wakefield, Castleford, Pontefract and Normanton, and should not mention Whitby. A Whitby holiday-let should name Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Sandsend and the Moors, and should not mention Leeds. The test is whether a resident of the place would nod. Google’s systems are getting better every year at telling the difference between a page that knows a place and a page that has heard of it.

The SEO in Wakefield page works through one district this way, from Castleford and Pontefract to Hemsworth and South Elmsall, in a district where fewer than one resident in three lives in the city itself.

WHO IS SEARCHING

Yorkshire’s sectors, and what each one types

Search demand follows the economy, and Yorkshire’s economy is unusually varied for one region. Each sector searches differently, and a business should know which pattern it is in before it pays for anything.

Manufacturing and engineering. Sheffield steel and tooling, Rotherham’s advanced manufacturing, Leeds and Bradford engineering, Huddersfield textiles and chemicals, Hull’s wind-turbine supply chain. These are business-to-business searches: cnc machining sheffield, steel fabrication rotherham, precision engineering leeds, powder coating bradford. Buyers are procurement people who research, so the organic result carries the enquiry and the map pack barely matters. Specifications, accreditations such as ISO 9001 and AS9100, capacity and lead times on the page beat any amount of agency copy.

Logistics and distribution. Doncaster’s iPort, the M18 and M62 corridors, Goole and Hull docks, Wakefield’s distribution parks at Normanton and Castleford. Searches are haulage doncaster, pallet delivery wakefield, warehouse space goole, customs clearance hull, and again they are researched rather than urgent. Fleet size, FORS accreditation, the depots you actually run, the lanes you actually cover.

Trades and home services. Everywhere, and the most map-pack-dependent searches in the region: plumber barnsley, electrician huddersfield, roofer scarborough, boiler repair doncaster. Decided by proximity, the star rating, review recency and whether the phone connects. Gas Safe and NICEIC registration, Which? Trusted Traders and Checkatrade listings. The town page supports the profile; it does not replace it.

Tourism and hospitality. York, Harrogate, Whitby, Scarborough, the Dales, the Moors, the East Riding coast. Searches are national, not local: a family in Birmingham types holiday cottage whitby, not seo anything. The competition is Booking.com, Airbnb, Sykes Cottages and TripAdvisor, and a small operator wins on its own name, on long-tail specifics such as dog friendly cottage robin hoods bay, and on the map pack for the town it is in.

Professional services. Leeds legal and financial firms, accountants in every town, architects in York and Harrogate, recruiters in Leeds and Sheffield. Researched searches where the organic result carries the enquiry; Law Society, ICAEW, ACCA and RIBA membership stated plainly. Leeds competition is national-grade; a Northallerton or Beverley accountant faces almost none.

Health and care. Dentists, private GPs, physiotherapists, care homes, opticians in every town. A mix: the map pack for the urgent and the organic result for the researched. General Dental Council registration, CQC ratings for care, NHS and private stated clearly.

Agriculture and rural business. The Dales, the Wolds, the Vale of York, Holderness. Farm shops, agricultural contractors, machinery dealers, equestrian, rural lettings. Thin, seasonal, almost uncontested searches where a single honest page ranks for years.

The pattern across all of them: the search is the sector plus the town, or the sector alone if the buyer is national. It is almost never the sector plus Yorkshire. Build for the search that is actually made.

CATEGORIES AND TYPES

The profile field that decides eligibility, by Yorkshire sector

For every business whose customers arrive through the map pack, one Business Profile field matters more than all the rest together: the primary category. It decides which searches the profile can appear for at all. Yorkshire’s sector mix means the wrong choice is common, because so many businesses here are two things at once.

Manufacturing and engineering. Manufacturer, Steel fabricator, Metal fabricator, Machine shop, Engineering firm, Precision engineer, Sheet metal contractor, Powder coating service, Welding supply, Tool manufacturer, Plastic fabrication company, Textile mill, Chemical plant, Electronics manufacturer, Industrial equipment supplier. Schema.org has Organization and LocalBusiness, and for a site that sells, Product on each item. Most manufacturers should not be filed under a retail category at all.

Logistics. Trucking company, Logistics service, Freight forwarding service, Courier service, Warehouse, Storage facility, Removals company, Shipping service, Customs broker, Pallet supplier, Van rental agency. Schema.org: MovingCompany, LocalBusiness, Organization.

Trades. Plumber, Heating contractor, Boiler service, Electrician, Roofing contractor, Builder, Bricklayer, Plasterer, Joiner, Carpenter, Kitchen fitter, Bathroom fitter, Tiler, Flooring contractor, Window installation service, Fencing contractor, Landscaper, Tree surgeon, Paving contractor, Drainage service, Scaffolder, Skip hire service, Locksmith, Pest control service. Schema.org: Plumber, Electrician, RoofingContractor, GeneralContractor, HousePainter, Locksmith, HomeAndConstructionBusiness.

Tourism and hospitality. Holiday home, Holiday apartment rental, Cottage rental, Bed and breakfast, Guest house, Hotel, Inn, Pub, Gastropub, Caravan park, Campground, Glamping site, Farm shop, Tea room, Café, Fish and chips takeaway, Brewery, Distillery, Tourist attraction, Museum, Visitor centre. Schema.org: LodgingBusiness, Hotel, BedAndBreakfast, Campground, Restaurant, BarOrPub, CafeOrCoffeeShop, TouristAttraction.

Professional services. Solicitor, Law firm, Conveyancer, Barrister, Accountant, Chartered accountant, Bookkeeper, Tax adviser, Financial adviser, Mortgage broker, Insurance broker, Architect, Surveyor, Structural engineer, Estate agent, Letting agent, Recruiter, Marketing agency, Web designer, IT support. Schema.org: Attorney, LegalService, AccountingService, FinancialService, InsuranceAgency, RealEstateAgent, ProfessionalService.

Health and care. Dentist, Dental clinic, Orthodontist, Optician, Physiotherapist, Chiropractor, Osteopath, Podiatrist, Private GP, Pharmacy, Care home, Nursing home, Home care service, Veterinarian, Dog groomer. Schema.org: Dentist, Physiotherapy, Optician, Pharmacy, MedicalClinic, VeterinaryCare.

Agriculture and rural. Farm, Farm shop, Agricultural service, Agricultural machinery dealer, Livestock dealer, Equestrian centre, Riding school, Feed supplier, Fencing contractor, Land surveyor, Rural estate agent. Schema.org: LocalBusiness, Store, and Product for what is sold.

Two rules, as everywhere. Choose the single most specific primary category that is true; a broad one costs you the specific searches and a false one is a suspension risk. Then mirror that choice in the Schema.org type on the website, in Bing Places and in Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect), so that all four systems read the business the same way. A Doncaster haulier who also rents two vans is a Trucking company, not a Van rental agency; a Whitby pub with three rooms is a Pub, not a Hotel.

WHAT THE WORK IS

What SEO for a Yorkshire business actually involves

Everything below is done by one person, remotely, and reported in writing each week: what was done, what moved, what is next. If a step is not worth doing for your business, the report says so. There is no account manager and nothing is passed to anyone else.

Decide which search you are in. Sector plus town, sector alone, or national. It takes a look at Search Console, a look at the results page for your real customers’ queries, and an honest conversation about where the customers actually come from. Nearly every Yorkshire business that has paid for a county campaign was in the wrong contest from the start.

The Business Profile, properly. Primary category chosen precisely. Secondary categories used honestly. Services listed one by one in the words a Yorkshire customer uses. Hours that are true, including the Saturday morning you actually keep. The business name exactly as it is in the real world, with no town or service stuffed into it. A visible address only if customers come to it; a service area, drawn where the van goes, if you go to them. Photographs that are yours. Free, an afternoon, and it changes eligibility rather than authority, so it shows within days.

A town page that could only be about that town. Written the way the Doncaster section above describes: the streets, the estates, the roads customers come in on, the sectors and shifts that shape when they search, what you do and what you do not. Marked up with the right Schema.org type, linked from the navigation, fast on a phone. If you genuinely serve Rotherham and Barnsley as well as Doncaster, each gets its own honest page, not a copy with the name swapped, and if you do not, you do not build them.

Consistency. Name, address and phone identical on the website, the Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business, Companies House where it applies, the trade bodies and the two or three directories that carry weight in your sector. Not bulk submissions to three hundred sites, which is a pattern Google’s spam policies describe and which does nothing.

Reviews as a process. A steady way of asking every satisfied customer, replies written for the next reader, and nothing bought or incentivised, which the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 now makes an offence in its own right as well as a Google problem.

Links from Yorkshire, not from link farms. The chamber you are actually a member of. The trade body. The local paper when there is news. The sports club you genuinely sponsor. The suppliers and customers who will link because the relationship is real. Slow, and the only kind that lasts.

For the manufacturers and the professionals, the organic work. Pages that answer the searches procurement people make, with the specifications, accreditations, capacities and case detail they are looking for, structured so that Google and the AI Overview above it can read them. This is where a South Yorkshire engineering firm or a Leeds professional practice gets its enquiries, and it is a different job from the map pack.

Measurement you can read. Google Search Console for what people searched and which page appeared, the Business Profile’s own insights for calls and direction requests, Google Analytics 4 for what happened after the click. Reported weekly against the enquiries you actually received.

What I will not do: promise a position, promise the county, buy links, buy reviews, or build a page for every Yorkshire town from one template. Anyone offering those things for Yorkshire is offering exactly what the results page is already full of.

ORDER OF WORK

What to do first for a Yorkshire business

  1. Name the search. Write down the three queries your best customers actually make. If none of them contains the word Yorkshire, you have your answer about the county page.
  2. Fix the Business Profile. Category, services, hours, name, address or service area, photographs. Free, one afternoon, effect within days.
  3. Read Search Console. Which queries you already appear for, from which page, at what position. Most Yorkshire businesses find their town’s searches landing on the homepage, which was never built for them.
  4. Build the town page, or rebuild the one you have until it could not be re-labelled for the next town along. Mark it up, link it from the navigation, make it fast.
  5. For business-to-business firms, build the sector pages, one per real service, with the specifications and accreditations on the page rather than in a PDF.
  6. Make the details consistent everywhere the business appears, and remove wrong listings rather than adding more.
  7. Start the review process and keep it running. Recency beats count.
  8. Only then think about links, and only the real kind.
  9. Measure for a quarter before changing course. Map results move in weeks, organic results in months, and the map pack is different for every searcher, so a single rank check tells you almost nothing.

If an agency is charging you monthly and steps two to four are still wrong, the fee is paying for a report, not for work. That is the most common thing found on a Yorkshire business’s profile, and a free look at the account would tell you in ten minutes.

THE SYSTEMS AND THE RULES

What you are measured against, by name

Vague names are half the confusion in this industry. These are the actual systems and documents a Yorkshire business is judged by, so any report, including mine, can be checked against the source.

Google’s surfaces. The Local Pack and the Local Finder behind “More places”; Google Maps; the Business Profile that feeds them, with its guidelines on representing your business, names, addresses, service areas and categories; the organic results; AI Overviews and AI Mode above them, drawing on the same pages. Google Search Central holds the documentation: the spam policies on scaled content and doorway pages, the structured-data guides for LocalBusiness and Product, and the page-experience material on Core Web Vitals, Largest Contentful Paint and Interaction to Next Paint.

What the website is marked up with. Schema.org’s LocalBusiness and its subtypes, Organization for a firm that is not a place people visit, Product with offers, price, priceCurrency and availability for anything sold, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList for the page’s own structure. The Rich Results Test says whether Google can read it.

What the measuring is done with. Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, PageSpeed Insights and the Chrome User Experience Report for real-user speed on phones, the Business Profile’s insights, Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places for the office worker on a laptop, Apple Business for the iPhone in a Leeds street.

The public record a buyer checks. Companies House; the Gas Safe Register and NICEIC for the trades; the General Dental Council and the Care Quality Commission for health and care; the Solicitors Regulation Authority, ICAEW, ACCA, RIBA and Propertymark for the professions; ISO 9001, AS9100 and FORS for manufacturing and logistics; the Food Standards Agency rating for anywhere with a kitchen; VisitEngland grading for accommodation. If the name and address on those do not match the profile, the mismatch is visible to Google and to the customer.

The law on reviews. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 makes publishing fake consumer reviews, and commissioning them, an offence the Competition and Markets Authority can act on directly. Keep the original message and the permission behind every testimonial you publish, and never touch a review seller.

None of it is a secret and none of it is a tactic. It is the checklist a serious report for a Yorkshire business is written against.

HOW THIS FITS

Yorkshire alongside the other regions

The same lesson turns up wherever a county or region name gets used as a keyword. Devon is one county name covering three separate markets in Exeter, Plymouth and the coast, and the Devon page works through why a county campaign fails there for the same reasons it fails here. The West Midlands is a tighter conurbation where the region and the city blur into one query, and the West Midlands page covers how a genuinely regional campaign is built when the towns really do share searchers. Yorkshire is the largest and most varied of the three, which makes the county page the least useful and the town page the most.

The honest summary: the county search belongs to agencies, listicles and procurement officers. The searches that bring a Yorkshire business customers are made in Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster, Harrogate, Hull and two hundred smaller places, from the pavement the customer is standing on, and they are won with one true town page and a Business Profile that is right. Neither is won with a page that says Yorkshire and means nowhere.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Yorkshire SEO questions, answered plainly

Should my page target “SEO Yorkshire” or my town?

Your town, almost always. The county search is typed by agencies, students and procurement teams; your customers type the sector plus the town they are standing in, and Google draws the map pack from that spot. A county page competes with large regional agencies and directory listicles for a searcher who is not your customer. A town page competes with templates for a searcher who is.

Is one Yorkshire page enough if I serve the whole county?

If you genuinely serve the whole county, you are almost certainly a business-to-business firm, and your customers search by sector rather than by place. Build the sector pages, state the areas you cover honestly, and let a regional page be a supporting page rather than the main one. If you serve three towns, build three honest town pages. If you serve one, build one. Forty templated town pages is the pattern Google’s spam policies describe, and it is what the county results are already full of.

Why is Doncaster easier than Leeds?

Competition and intent. Leeds searches are contested by national agencies bidding on everything and by professional buyers who compare five suppliers. Doncaster searches are contested mostly by templated town pages and a handful of genuine local businesses, and the searcher is a local owner looking for local help. A genuine Doncaster page displaces a template the moment it exists. The same is true of Rotherham, Wakefield, Barnsley, Beverley and most of the market towns.

Do I need a Yorkshire address to rank in Yorkshire?

For the map pack you need a presence you can legitimately claim: premises customers visit or a real service area you genuinely cover. A virtual office in Leeds or a friend’s address in York is against Google’s guidelines and is what gets profiles suspended. For the organic results, address does not matter at all; the page does. I work remotely and have no Yorkshire address, and none of the work requires one.

My manufacturing business does not care about the map pack. What matters?

The organic result and the page itself. Procurement people search by capability, cnc machining sheffield or steel fabrication rotherham, then read. Specifications, capacities, tolerances, accreditations such as ISO 9001 or AS9100, lead times, the sectors you already supply, and photographs of your actual shop floor beat any agency copy. Product markup where you sell standard items. A quote form that works. It is a different job from local SEO and it is where South Yorkshire engineering enquiries come from.

How do holiday lets and hospitality fit in?

Their searches are national, not Yorkshire. A family in Birmingham types holiday cottage whitby, and the competition is Booking.com, Airbnb, Sykes and TripAdvisor. A small operator wins on its own name, on long-tail specifics such as dog-friendly or sea view, and on the map pack for its own town. The county word does not appear in the search at all.

How many reviews does a Yorkshire business need?

There is no number, and anyone quoting one invented it. What matters is that reviews keep arriving and get replies. A Harrogate practice with a strong average and nothing new for a year reads as dormant. A steady trickle looks like a working business and is far harder to fake. Never buy or incentivise them; since 6 April 2025 that is a legal problem as well as a Google one.

Will a Yorkshire page rank me for Leeds, Sheffield and Hull?

Not reliably, and not for the map pack at all, because that is drawn from the searcher’s location. For the organic results a county page can pick up town searches at the edges, but a searcher in Hull typing Hull mostly sees Hull pages. If you genuinely serve those cities they deserve their own honest pages. If you do not, do not build them.

How long before a Yorkshire business sees results?

Profile fixes change eligibility, so they can show in the map pack within days. A new or rebuilt town page takes weeks to be crawled and indexed and months to settle. Reviews and links build over a year. Anyone giving a date for a specific position is guessing, because the map pack is different for every searcher and the organic result depends on what everyone else does too.

You are not in Yorkshire. Does that matter?

For the work, no. Everything is done through your Business Profile, your website, Search Console and written reports, and none of it requires standing in Doncaster. What it means is that I will never claim to be a Yorkshire business, never put a Yorkshire address on anything, and never suggest you do either. The local knowledge on this page is checkable, and the results are measured in the enquiries you receive.

NEXT STEP

Tell me which Yorkshire you actually sell to

Send the business name, the website and the towns your customers really come from. You get a written answer: which search your customers are actually making, whether a county page or a town page is the right first move, what Search Console already says about you, and what I would fix first. It costs nothing and there is nothing to sign. If the honest answer is that the website is fine and the Business Profile is the problem, that is what the answer will say.
